5 Lateral-Thinking Teasers That Aren’t What They Seem

Today’s five teasers are a little sneaky. Each one sounds puzzling, even impossible, until you notice the word or assumption that’s leading you astray. Read slowly, question everything, and have fun.

Today's lateral-thinking teasers

Read each teaser, think outside the box, and type a short answer.

  1. A man pushes his car up to a hotel and tells the owner he's bankrupt. Nobody seems worried, and nobody calls a tow truck. What is going on? (Type the name of what he's doing.)

  2. What can you hold in your right hand, but never in your left hand?

  3. A woman shoots her husband, holds him under water for five minutes, then hangs him up. An hour later, they enjoy dinner together. What is her job?

  4. How can a person go eight days without sleep and still feel well rested?

  5. A rooster climbs to the very top of a barn roof and lays an egg. Which side of the roof does the egg roll down?

How to Play

  • Read the teaser and type a short answer – a word or two is plenty.
  • Tap Check to see if you’ve got it.
  • Tap Hint for a gentle push, or Show answer to read the explanation.
  • Your progress is saved on this device.

How Lateral Thinking Works

The term “lateral thinking” was coined by Edward de Bono in 1967 to describe solving problems from an unexpected angle. These teasers work by planting an assumption in your mind. When you’re stuck, ask yourself which word could have a second meaning, or what the teaser never actually said.
